Leeds, UK (StudyFinds.org) – An artificial intelligence system can detect a person with a heart attack next year – with a normal eye scan.
Leeds University team believes this AI tool will open the door to the world’s number one killer cheap and easy filtering program. In their study, they found that the computer could predict up to 80 percent accuracy in patients with a heart attack in the next 12 months. The discovery is further evidence that our eyes are not only “windows of the soul” but also windows of general health.
“Cardiovascular diseases, including heart failure, are the leading cause of death in the world and the second leading cause of death in the United Kingdom.
“This method allows for the detection of coronary heart disease. Retinal scans are relatively inexpensive and routinely used by many ophthalmologists.
“The system can be used to monitor the symptoms of heart disease.”
Looking at the retina to find red flags in the heart
The retina is a small membrane behind the eye that contains light-sensitive cells. Doctors have found that changes in the small arteries indicate cardiovascular disease, including heart problems.
The authors used advanced II to teach the machine to read more than 5,000 eye scans automatically. The scans come from routine eye exams when visiting optics or eye clinics. All participants are part of the UK Biobank, which monitors the health of half a million adults.
In-depth learning is a complex series of algorithms that allow machines to make predictions based on data patterns. The method described in the journal Natural Machine IntelligenceAccording to the researchers, it could change the course of the heart.

The study identified a link between pathology and changes in the patient’s heart in the retina. After the system recognizes each image pattern, the AI can only estimate the left ventricle size and pump efficiency from the retina scan.
This is one of the four parts of the heart. Increased ventricle increases the risk of heart disease. The computer combined the estimated left ventricle size and pump efficiency with information such as age and gender.
His eyes reveal a lot about disease and death
Doctors currently determine this information using MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) or cardiac echocardiography scan. The test results are expensive and often only in the hospital. In countries with limited access to health care, the challenges may not be accessible to many. In developed countries, they increase health care costs and waiting times.
“The AI system is an excellent tool for solving complex designs in nature, and we have found that – complex design in the retina is associated with heart changes,” said co-author Sven Plein of the British Heart Foundation.
A recent study confirmed the link between retinal biological aging and mortality. Those with retinal detachment up to 67% are more likely to die in the next decade.
