New technology makes windshield repair more difficult than ever

We often think that the windshield is just to keep the outside of our car inside. That is true, and it can be said to be the work of “high technology.” After all, the wind has not changed in recent decades. In fact, for most car history, windshield repairs were like replacing glass in any window. Although today’s technology is changing that rapidly.

The first step is to integrate the cameras or other sensors into the window, watching with you on the road. “They are becoming more and more common in many vehicles,” says Aaron Shulenberg, executive director of Conflict Repair Specialists for Conflict Repair Technicians. Really simple operations now require complex diagnostics and measurement.

The process is not easy during windshield repair so that the driver does not feel a sense of insecurity when returning the car. Scroll through this Honda presentation to feel about the number of systems involved and the measurement process involved. In some cases, motorists are advised not to use a windshield at any time. And this is spreading to other parts of the car: Ford recently advised drivers with replacement systems to replace their protective covers whenever they need more than paint work.

Modern car windshield may have a special display area for auto-projector and technology associated with automatic cleaners or high-intensity beams. As cars become more complex, repair shops often return to better quality market segments to reduce costs, but Ford, Honda and FCA all recommend not using after-market windshields. BMW goes as far as requiring special electromagnetic compatibility screws to be used in maintenance to prevent disturbing ADAS properties.

Adequate insurance should cover these processes, but that does not mean that your insurance company loves it. “Many of these technologies are looking to reduce the risk of accidents in the insurance industry,” Schulberg said. Unfortunately, it can be challenging for insurance companies to understand and write these maintenance procedures. Yesterday’s $ 500 glass replacement could cost thousands of dollars today.

It does not mean it is worthless. A recent Reuters analysis of the adoption of various ADAS technologies shows how much risk has been reduced and as a result it is becoming more widespread due to car mechanisms and models.
